That’s where aging life care professionals make a difference — serving as compassionate advocates, coordinators, and guides for individuals and their families.

While Cheer’s Care Case managers focus on overseeing day-to-day home care services, ensuring caregivers, nurses, and therapists are aligned with each client’s personalized care plan, aging life care professionals take a broader view.

At Cheer Home Care and Cheer Health Care, we believe exceptional senior care happens when caregivers and occupational therapists work hand in hand. This partnership helps clients live more safely and independently at home.

Research shows that when caregivers and occupational therapists collaborate, seniors experience better mobility, fewer falls, and greater overall well-being. It’s a philosophy we’ve embraced across our home care and health care services in San Diego!

How Occupational Therapy Enhances Home Care

Occupational therapy (OT) helps clients regain or maintain independence in everyday tasks from dressing and bathing to cooking and moving around safely. It’s not only about physical ability but about adapting the environment, routines, and tools to fit each person’s needs. Our Care Case Managers coordinate with licensed occupational therapists to work directly alongside the caregiver, ensuring a fully connected approach to care that integrates medical guidance with hands-on support in the home.

Now Is the Time for Hope and Action

Every year, thousands of San Diegans gather for the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s, the world’s largest event dedicated to raising awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support, and research. The 2025 Walk was no exception; it was a day filled with purpose! With new treatments emerging and conversations about early detection gaining momentum, this year’s Walk reminded us that now is the time for hope and, more importantly, for action.

The Alzheimer’s Association San Diego/Imperial Chapter

The Alzheimer’s Association San Diego/Imperial Chapter plays a vital role in our region, providing essential support services, education, and resources to families and caregivers navigating life with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. Their mission is to lead the way to end Alzheimer’s by accelerating global research, promoting early detection, and ensuring quality care and support. Their vision is simple yet powerful: a world without Alzheimer’s and all other dementias. You can learn more about their programs and services here.

Why Cheer Home Health Care Walked

At Cheer Home Health Care, our commitment to Alzheimer’s awareness goes beyond caregiving; it’s personal, it’s professional, and it’s connected to our community. Our CEO, Brooke Martindale, proudly serves on the Board of Directors for the Alzheimer’s Association San Diego/Imperial Chapter. Through this partnership, we host support groups at our office, connecting family caregivers with education, resources, and emotional support. We also understand how demanding caregiving can be. That’s why we emphasize respite care and self-care, encouraging families to take time to recharge while ensuring their loved ones receive compassionate, professional care. Supporting the Walk to End Alzheimer’s is one more way we give back — raising funds for research, showing up for families, and reflecting our belief that together, we can make a lasting difference.

Moments That Mattered

Our team shared reflections from this year’s event that captured the heart of the day:

“My favorite part was seeing so many colleagues and friends there, all committed to the same cause – a world without Alzheimer’s.”

“The Promise Flower Garden was incredible. Each color represented a different connection to the disease. I chose purple in memory of my grandmother, who had Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. It was a visual reminder of why we were all walking.”

“I met some great people offering new resources — from Reiki therapy and clinical trials to training programs for professionals working with Alzheimer’s clients. It’s inspiring to see how many people are working toward better care and treatment.”

“The weather was sunny and beautiful! I loved seeing the huge turnout — families, communities, and senior living centers like Fredericka Manor and The Vi, all showing up in matching shirts to honor loved ones. It was both touching and motivating.”

Moments like these remind us that the Walk is about connection, remembrance, and hope.

How Cheer Home Health Care Supports Alzheimer’s Care

Caring for someone with Alzheimer’s requires empathy, patience, and expertise. At Cheer Home Health Care, we provide personalized Alzheimer’s and dementia care designed to meet each client’s unique needs and to support families through every stage of the disease.

Our caregivers receive training to assist with:

Daily routines that promote consistency and comfort

Meaningful engagement through familiar activities

Safety and supervision in the home environment

Emotional reassurance and compassionate communication

We work closely with families to create customized care plans that evolve as needs change – ensuring dignity, comfort, and support every step of the way. Contact a local care advisor to explore how we can help your loved one today.

Gratitude and Moving Forward

The 2025 Walk to End Alzheimer’s was a powerful reminder of the collective strength in our community. To every participant, volunteer, and organization that helped make it possible — thank you!

We encourage our clients, caregivers, and community members to continue showing up for causes that strengthen our shared mission.

Together with the Alzheimer’s Association San Diego/Imperial Chapter, we remain dedicated to this journey with every family we serve.

In September, our Cheer Home Health Care team joined families, caregivers, and advocates at the 2025 ALS San Diego Walk. As we walked, we overheard a conversation that captured the spirit of the day: two women said, “We are your clients too! You all are incredible. We share your story with everyone because you really change lives. Your caregivers are heroes.” Their joy was contagious, and they went on to share how much they adore our own Barry Howland. Encounters like these remind us why this event and our daily work carry such meaning.

What is ALS?

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, is a progressive neurodegenerative illness that impacts nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. Over time, it leads to the loss of muscle control, making even simple daily tasks increasingly difficult. While there is currently no cure, the strength of a supportive community can make a tremendous difference!

That’s where ALS San Diego steps in. Their mission is to support families living with ALS in San Diego and Imperial Counties by providing care services and resources (at no cost!). From in-home support to equipment lending, education, and caregiver programs, their work ensures that families never have to face this disease alone. The organization is also committed to advancing research and connecting families with the latest medical opportunities for clinical trials.

Learn more about their mission and resources here: ALS San Diego.

The Walk Experience

Teams of 20 or more walked proudly in support of loved ones, carrying signs and wearing matching shirts. Many stopped along the waterfront pathway on which the walk took place to capture photos, creating moments of camaraderie and celebration amidst the weight of ALS.

Our team was moved by the incredible turnout and sheer dedication of ALS San Diego staff. Their commitment shone throughout the event, demonstrating the vital role community-based nonprofits play in supporting families facing the realities of ALS.

What We Learned

The event was an opportunity for both learning and connection.

We discovered that 50% of ALS San Diego’s clients receive VA benefits, a resource that can significantly alleviate the financial and care-related challenges veterans and their families face.

We were reminded of the power of support networks as we watched caregivers, friends, and family walk side by side in solidarity.

Why It Matters for Cheer Home Health Care

For Cheer Home Health Care, being present at events like this goes beyond raising awareness; it reflects our mission. Home and healthcare is more than just assistance with daily needs; it’s about standing with people through their toughest battles. Participating in the ALS San Diego Walk allowed us to demonstrate to our clients, their families, and the broader community that our work is not just a service, but a calling.

Community Impact

The ALS San Diego Walk was a huge fundraising success. Together, the community has raised over $400,000 (and counting) to support local families living with ALS in San Diego directly. This milestone speaks volumes about the generosity and commitment of San Diego residents.

How Cheer Supports Families Facing ALS

Caring for someone with ALS requires adaptability, patience, and empathy. All qualities we look for when hiring! Professional caregivers, CNAs, and nurses play a vital role by:

Assisting with mobility and safe transfers

Supporting communication needs as speech becomes affected

Coordinating with healthcare teams to provide comfort

Offering companionship to reduce isolation

Moving Forward Together

Walking alongside clients, caregivers, and advocates reaffirmed that our strength lies in community. Whether through raising funds, offering hands-on care, or simply being present, each act of support contributes to improving the lives of those touched by ALS.

A physical therapist (PT) is a licensed healthcare professional who helps individuals move more effectively, manage pain, and recover from injuries or illnesses.

Cheer Home Care recently welcomed Cheryll Kidd, a passionate dental hygienist based in San Diego, for an informative Lunch and Learn session. With more than eight years of experience in mobile dental care, Cheryll specialises in delivering preventative dental treatments directly to those who may find it difficult to attend a traditional dental office (particularly seniors).

Her mission is simple but impactful: to provide personalised, accessible care in a comfortable environment. Whether visiting a private home, assisted living community, or skilled nursing facility, Cheryll ensures each patient receives the attention they deserve without the stress of travel.

Why Dental Care Matters for Seniors

Oral health plays a critical role in overall health, especially for older adults. Seniors face a higher risk of gum disease, tooth decay, dry mouth, and oral infections (conditions that can affect nutrition, communication, and even heart health).

Cheryll reminded attendees that prevention is key: “Regular cleanings and screenings can help avoid pain, tooth loss, and more serious health issues.” Proactive care helps preserve dignity, independence, and quality of life.

Overcoming Mobility and Cognitive Challenges

Cheryll offered practical and compassionate strategies for supporting patients with additional health challenges:

Dementia and Alzheimer’s

A calm environment, gentle reassurance, and short, simple instructions can make daily oral care more manageable. Keeping routines familiar helps foster cooperation.

Parkinson’s or Arthritis

For individuals with limited dexterity, adaptive tools such as electric toothbrushes with larger handles and water flossers can help maintain independence and reduce arm shaking.

Bedridden or Frail Seniors

Positioning support, daily oral checks, and gentle cleaning methods ensure comfort while maintaining hygiene for those who cannot leave their bed. The use of suction tools helps reduce saliva and mouth props, particularly for patients with limited opening.

Tools and Products that Make a Difference

From her hands-on experience, Cheryll shared senior-friendly product recommendations:

Toothpaste: Gentle fluoride formulas to strengthen enamel and prevent cavities.

Flossers: Pre-threaded flossers or water flossers for easy handling.

Rinses: Alcohol-free mouth rinses to prevent dryness and irritation.

Small changes in products can make a big difference in comfort and consistency.

The Value of Mobile Dental Care

Cheryll’s service list includes oral prophylaxis, periodontal assessments, oral cancer screenings, scaling and root planing, fluoride treatments, silver diamine fluoride applications, digital x-rays, and dental referrals – all brought directly to the patient!

Her patients range from children as young as three to seniors over 100, with a particular focus on those who are homebound, living with disabilities, or residing in long-term care facilities. By eliminating the need for travel, she removes one of the most significant barriers to essential dental care.

Community Learning with Cheer Home Care

This Lunch and Learn is just one example of Cheer Home Care’s dedication to supporting San Diego’s senior community. These events bring together experts, resources, and practical advice for families, caregivers, and healthcare professionals. Access to knowledge, the right tools, and a compassionate care network make all the difference in maintaining health and dignity!
