As our loved ones age, it’s natural to want them to remain independent and continue living in the comfort of their home for as long as possible. By 2030, nearly 10 million Californians will be older adults, representing approximately 25% of the state’s population. This growing demographic shift means more families than ever will be navigating questions about aging and care.

One of the most common questions families ask is: “How do I know when it’s time to seek help?” The answer is different for everyone, but there are often signs that additional support could improve both safety and quality of life.

Signs It May Be Time to Consider In-Home Care

Changes in Personal Care and Hygiene

Have you noticed your loved one repeatedly wearing the same clothes, struggling with bathing, or having difficulty managing daily grooming routines? These can be early indicators that everyday tasks are becoming more challenging.

Increased Forgetfulness

Occasional forgetfulness is a normal part of aging, but missed medications, unpaid bills, forgotten appointments, or getting lost in familiar places may signal the need for additional support and monitoring.

Difficulty Managing the Home

A once-tidy home becoming cluttered, unopened mail piling up, expired food in the refrigerator, or neglected household responsibilities can indicate that daily tasks are becoming overwhelming.

Changes in Mobility or Balance

Falls are one of the leading causes of injury among older adults. Difficulty walking, trouble getting in and out of chairs, or a noticeable fear of falling are all signs that support may be beneficial.

Social Isolation

Many seniors experience loneliness and isolation, which can impact both physical and emotional well-being. Reduced social interaction, withdrawing from favorite activities, or spending long periods alone may indicate a need for companionship and engagement.

Family Caregiver Burnout

Sometimes the signs are not only with the older adult but also with family members. If caregiving responsibilities are becoming stressful or difficult to balance alongside work and family life, it may be time to explore professional support.

Why Families Choose Cheer Home Care

At Cheer Home Care and Cheer Health Care, we believe that care should never be one-size-fits-all. Our mission is to bring care back home by helping older adults maintain independence, dignity, and quality of life in the place they feel most comfortable. What makes Cheer different is our personalized approach, exceptional caregivers, and ability to provide support that evolves alongside a client’s needs.

Our Three-Tier Caregiver Approach

College Companions

One of Cheer’s most unique offerings, our College Companions bring energy, conversation, and meaningful connection into the home. They provide companionship, social engagement, transportation to appointments and activities, technology support, and opportunities for seniors to remain active and connected to their communities. For many clients, these relationships become a highlight of their week!

Traditional Caregivers

Our Traditional Caregivers provide compassionate assistance with activities of daily living, including personal care, meal preparation, medication reminders, mobility support, transportation, companionship, and light household assistance.

Executive Caregivers

For clients seeking a higher level of support, our Executive Caregivers offer concierge-style care backed by advanced experience and training. Whether assisting with recovery after surgery, supporting complex care needs, coordinating appointments, or providing greater oversight, these caregivers deliver exceptional service with professionalism.

Beyond Traditional Home Care

As care needs change, families often benefit from access to a broader healthcare team. Through Cheer Health Care, clients can access additional clinical and rehabilitation services designed to support recovery, wellness, and long-term independence.

Our network includes:

Registered Nurses (RNs)

Licensed Vocational Nurses (LVNs)

Physical Therapists (PTs)

Occupational Therapists (OTs)

Speech Therapists (STs)

This integrated approach allows families to access both non-medical home care and healthcare services while remaining in the comfort and familiarity of home.

Supporting San Diego Families with Personalized Care

A few hours of companionship, support after a hospitalization, memory and cognitive care, or ongoing assistance with daily living can make a significant difference in a senior’s quality of life.

Our caregivers and healthcare professionals work together to create personalized care plans that reflect each client’s goals, preferences, and unique circumstances. We are proud to offer trusted home care in San Diego, helping families find peace of mind while allowing older adults to continue living safely and comfortably at home.

Starting the Conversation

Many families wait until a crisis occurs before seeking help. In reality, introducing support early can often prevent emergencies and reduce stress. If you’ve noticed some of these signs in a loved one, it may be time to start a conversation about additional support. To learn more about our home care and healthcare services, call (858) 868-5500. Together, we can help your loved one age safely, confidently, and with the dignity they deserve.

Understanding Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia

Every journey with memory loss is unique. During Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month, we recognize the millions of individuals and families affected by Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. As awareness grows, so does the importance of education, early intervention, and compassionate support.

According to the Alzheimer’s Association, Alzheimer’s is the most common cause of dementia, impacting memory, thinking, and behavior over time. While there is currently no cure, there are many ways families and caregivers can support quality of life and help seniors remain engaged and connected.

What Is the Difference Between Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia?

Dementia is an umbrella term for symptoms that affect memory, reasoning, and daily functioning. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common type of dementia.

Common symptoms may include:

Memory loss that disrupts daily life

Difficulty completing familiar tasks

Challenges with planning or problem-solving

Confusion with time or place

Changes in mood or personality

Understanding these signs can help families seek support earlier and access the resources they need.

Memory Care Support for Seniors in San Diego

At Cheer Home Care and Cheer Health Care, we understand that caring for someone with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia requires specialized support.

Our Memory and Cognitive Care services are designed to help seniors remain safe, comfortable, and engaged in the place they call home.

Services may include:

Companion care and meaningful engagement

Cognitive stimulation activities

Assistance with daily routines

Medication reminders

Transportation and accompaniment

Respite care for family caregivers

Collaboration with healthcare professionals and families

Our goal is to support both the individual and the family throughout every stage of the journey.

5 Ways Caregivers Can Support Brain Health

While no single habit can prevent Alzheimer’s disease, research continues to show that healthy lifestyle choices may support overall brain health.

1. Encourage Regular Physical Activity

Walking, stretching, swimming, and other forms of movement can support circulation, mobility, and overall wellness.

2. Promote Social Connection

Meaningful conversations, family visits, community activities, and companionship can help reduce isolation and support emotional well-being.

3. Keep the Mind Engaged

Reading, puzzles, music, hobbies, and learning new skills can help stimulate cognitive function.

4. Support Healthy Sleep Habits

Quality sleep plays an important role in overall brain health and daily functioning.

5. Focus on Nutrition and Hydration

A balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and healthy fats may support long-term health and wellness.

Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month Events in San Diego

Throughout June, organizations across San Diego are hosting educational programs, support groups, fundraising events, and community gatherings focused on Alzheimer’s awareness and brain health.

These events provide opportunities for families, caregivers, healthcare professionals, and community members to learn and advocate on behalf of those affected by memory loss.

We encourage families to explore local opportunities to get involved and support the Alzheimer’s community.

Community Leadership Makes a Difference

Cheer Home Care and Cheer Health Care CEO Brooke Martindale is honored to serve on the 2026 Board of Directors for the Alzheimer’s Association San Diego/Imperial Chapter.

This group of dedicated leaders provides strategic vision, governance, and stewardship to guide the organization’s work and advance its mission. Through leadership, advocacy, education, and community partnerships, they continue to strengthen support for individuals and families impacted by Alzheimer’s disease throughout our region.

You Don’t Have to Navigate Memory Loss Alone

A diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease or dementia affects the entire family. If you are noticing changes in a loved one or feel additional support at home may be beneficial, having the right care team can make a meaningful difference.

At Cheer Home Care and Cheer Health Care, we are committed to helping seniors live with dignity, purpose, and connection while providing families with peace of mind and trusted support.

The post Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month: Supporting Seniors Living with Memory Loss in San Diego first appeared on Cheer Home Care.

Each year on May 27th, communities across the country come together to celebrate National Senior Health & Fitness Day, a day dedicated to encouraging older adults to stay active, engaged, and connected!

This can look different for everyone, but even gentle activity can support confidence and day-to-day well-being.

The Benefits of Staying Active

Staying active doesn’t have to mean intense workouts or long routines. It can be as simple as a short walk, light stretching, or participating in a group class.

Regular movement for seniors can help:

Improve strength and balance, reducing the risk of falls

Support heart health and circulation

Maintain mobility and flexibility for everyday tasks

Boost mood and support mental well-being

Encourage routine and social connection

It doesn’t have to be a big change – a small, consistent movement can go a long way!

Words That Inspire & the World Around Us

Staying active isn’t about doing more; it’s about continuing to do what you love, in ways that feel right for you.

As legendary San Diego-based senior athlete Ernestine Shepherd reminds us: “Age is nothing but a number.” Her story is a powerful reminder that movement can begin at any stage of life, and that it’s never too late to start.

Living in a place like San Diego also makes it easier to stay active in ways that feel enjoyable and natural. From coastal walks and park strolls to time spent in the sunshine, the outdoors offers many opportunities to keep moving and stay connected to your surroundings. Sometimes, it’s as simple as stepping outside!

The History Behind National Senior Health & Fitness Day

National Senior Health & Fitness Day was established in 1993 by the National Senior Games Association. It has since grown into the largest annual older adult health and wellness event in the United States, with thousands of organizations participating each year. The goal is simple: to help older adults discover ways to stay active, support their health, and maintain independence for as long as possible!

How Caregivers Support Health and Fitness at Home

Starting (or maintaining) a fitness routine can feel overwhelming without the right support. That’s where thoughtful, consistent care can make things feel easier.

At Cheer Home Care and Cheer Health Care, our caregivers support clients by:

Encouraging safe, appropriate movement based on individual needs

Building simple, manageable daily routines that include activity

Supporting walks, stretching, or light exercises

Assisting with transportation to community programs or classes

Providing companionship that makes movement more enjoyable

It’s not about pushing limits; it’s about meeting someone where they are and supporting what feels comfortable and achievable.

Local Senior Fitness Resources in San Diego

If you or a loved one are looking to stay active in the community, here are a few trusted options in San Diego:

San Diego Parks and Recreation Department – Provides community centers with activities and programs designed for older adults.

SilverSneakers – A widely available fitness program offering access to gyms and online classes, often included with Medicare plans.

Gill’s Fitness – Trainers use advanced exercise science techniques, including eccentric-focused training, to help safely build strength and mobility. Proudly local to San Diego, they offer expert fitness support for seniors and mature adults across multiple locations.

Silver Strong Fitness – We’ve had the pleasure of doing workouts ourselves with Jeff and couldn’t recommend him more. His approach is encouraging, professional, and tailored to helping seniors and mature adults feel stronger and more confident through movement.

Supporting Health, One Step at a Time

National Senior Health & Fitness Day highlights that it’s never too late to start moving and that every step, stretch, or moment of activity can make a difference in healthy aging. If you or a loved one could benefit from extra support at home, our team is here to help.

An Evening Centered Around Music, Memory, and Hope

This year’s Alzheimer’s Association San Diego Brilliance Gala at the beautiful Seabird Ocean Resort & Spa brought together families, healthcare professionals, advocates, and community leaders for an evening that felt personal to so many in the room.

With ocean views and a theme centered around “Music Meets Memory,” the evening was both uplifting and emotional, a reminder of how closely Alzheimer’s and dementia touch our communities across San Diego County.

At Cheer Home Care & Health Care, this mission is personal. More than 60% of the clients we support are living with Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia. Many members of our own team have also walked alongside grandparents or loved ones facing memory loss firsthand.

The Power of Music in Dementia and Alzheimer’s Care

The gala’s focus on music hit home with our team because we often see how music can reconnect someone to a memory or feeling. Certain songs can shift an atmosphere instantly, bringing calm, joy, or even conversation where there was once silence.

During the evening, attendees were invited to dedicate songs on records passed around the room. Krystal, Cheer’s Director of Patient Services and Care, chose “The Wedding Song (There Is Love)” by Noel Paul Stookey in honor of her grandfather. One moment that reflected just how personal this cause is for so many families.

A Standout Speech From the Brilliance Gala

One of the most moving moments of the night came during a speech honoring a speaker’s late mother, who would have turned 100 years old that day. At the end of his remarks, a birthday cake was brought onto the stage. As he blew out the candles, he dedicated the moment to every person in the audience spending another year without someone they missed dearly because of Alzheimer’s or dementia. Attendees will not forget this quiet and honest time. Events like the Brilliance Gala remind us that awareness matters. Research matters. Support matters.

Cheer’s Commitment to Alzheimer’s and Dementia Care in San Diego

As in previous years, Cheer proudly sponsored the cocktail bar during the evening. Brooke’s volunteer and Board of Directors service with the Alzheimer’s Association continues to inspire Cheer’s mission and her ongoing commitment to advocacy and education for families affected by cognitive decline.

“Being involved only increases my desire to support the work being done,” Brooke shared. “You see firsthand the progress the Alzheimer’s Association is making and how much funding is going toward groundbreaking research.”

At Cheer, we believe families deserve compassionate, experienced support when navigating dementia and cognitive changes at home.

Through our Memory & Cognitive Care services in San Diego, we provide trusted in-home support for individuals living with:

Alzheimer’s disease

Lewy Body dementia

Frontotemporal dementia

Vascular dementia

Other memory and cognitive challenges

A safe and supportive home environment is key when caring for individuals living with dementia. Recently, we hosted Jacqueline Silverman from Aging Advisory Services, who shared practical insights on how families and caregivers can create a space that promotes safety, comfort, and dignity. This conversation highlighted that dementia care is not only about support, but also about thoughtfully shaping the environment to meet changing needs.

What Does It Mean to Be a Certified Senior Advisor (CSA)?

Jacqueline Silverman is a Certified Senior Advisor (CSA®), a professional designation that demonstrates expertise in aging-related health, social, and financial considerations.

A CSA® is trained to:

Understand the complexities of aging

Guide families through care decisions

Advocate for the well-being and dignity of older adults

This expertise brings a holistic perspective to creating environments that support those living with dementia. Learn more about her work here: https://agingadvisoryservices.com/

Why a Dementia-Sensitive Home Matters

As highlighted during our session, safety for individuals living with dementia requires more than physical adjustments. It involves creating an environment that supports:

Cognitive functioning

Emotional well-being

Independence and dignity

Key Areas to Focus On

1. Physical Environment: Reducing Risk and Improving Accessibility

Simple changes can significantly reduce the risk of injury:

Remove tripping hazards like loose rugs

Keep pathways clear and easy to navigate

Install grab bars in bathrooms

Improve lighting and contrast throughout the home

Consider automatic shut-offs for appliances

These adjustments create a safer space while supporting mobility and independence!

2. Cognitive Environment: Supporting Orientation and Routine

Dementia often impacts memory and orientation, so clarity and simplicity are key:

Use visual cues and signage (e.g., labeling rooms or drawers)

Simplify layouts and daily routines

Provide prompts for tasks

Use memory aids like clocks or whiteboards

These tools help reduce confusion and support confidence in daily living.

3. Emotional Environment: Creating Calm and Comfort

A supportive emotional environment can make a noticeable difference:

Maintain familiar and calming spaces

Reduce background noise and overstimulation

Preserve routines wherever possible

Include personal items and meaningful décor

These elements help individuals feel grounded, safe, and connected to their identity

Addressing High-Risk Safety Concerns

Certain risks require additional attention in a dementia-sensitive home:

Secure doors to reduce wandering

Use motion sensors or alarms when needed

Install barriers for stairs

Lock away hazardous items (cleaning supplies, sharp objects)

Set safe water temperatures to prevent burns

Proactively addressing these concerns helps prevent accidents and provides families with peace of mind.

A Thoughtful, Personalized Approach

Every individual’s experience with dementia is different. What works for one person may not work for another, which is why care should always be personalized, flexible, and compassionate.

At Cheer Home Care and Cheer Health Care, we see firsthand how small environmental adjustments (combined with human connection) can improve daily life for both clients and their families.

How Cheer Home Care Can Help

Our caregivers are experienced in supporting individuals living with dementia, with a focus on:

Creating safe, structured daily routines

Providing companionship and emotional support

Assisting with activities of daily living

Helping families implement dementia-sensitive home practices

We are here to support you every step of the way!
