Living with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) brings changes that can affect nearly every part of daily life. As a progressive neurological condition, ALS can impact mobility, communication, swallowing, breathing, and a person’s ability to complete everyday activities independently. For individuals and families navigating an ALS diagnosis, having the right support system in place can make all the difference.

At Cheer Home Care and Cheer Health Care, we understand that ALS care is never one-size-fits-all. Needs can change over time, sometimes quickly, which is why personalized, adaptable in-home care can help individuals remain safely and comfortably at home while providing families with additional support and peace of mind. Cheer provides specialized care for movement disorders in San Diego County, including support for individuals living with ALS.

How Home Care Can Support Someone Living with ALS

As ALS progresses, everyday activities may become increasingly challenging. Specialized caregivers and healthcare professionals can provide support that evolves alongside the individual and their family.

Depending on each person’s needs, in-home support may include:

  • Assistance with mobility, transfers, and fall prevention
  • Personal care, bathing, dressing, and grooming
  • Meal preparation and assistance with eating
  • Companionship and emotional support
  • Transportation and assistance with appointments
  • Respite and additional support for family caregivers
  • Skilled nursing and clinical support when appropriate
  • Physical, occupational, and speech therapy support

Cheer brings caregivers and private nurses together to help families access different levels of support.

Helping Families Adapt Through Every Stage

ALS does not follow the same path for every individual. This makes flexibility especially important.

Care that may begin with companionship, transportation, or assistance around the home can evolve into more hands-on personal care, mobility assistance, nursing support, or therapy.

Providing this care at home can also help preserve something incredibly valuable: familiarity. Remaining in a comfortable environment, surrounded by family, routines, and the things that make home feel like home, can support dignity and quality of life throughout the ALS journey.

Supporting the Family Caregiver

An ALS diagnosis affects more than the individual living with the disease. Spouses, children, relatives, and friends often become an essential part of the caregiving team.

While caring for someone you love can be rewarding, the physical and emotional demands can also become significant as ALS progresses. Professional home care can provide families with an additional layer of support, allowing loved ones time to rest, work, attend to other responsibilities, or spend time together as family rather than always being in the role of caregiver.

The Importance of Community: ALS San Diego

Strong community organizations play an essential role in connecting families with education, resources, and support. Cheer is proud to work alongside and support ALS San Diego, an organization dedicated to serving individuals and families affected by ALS throughout San Diego. ALS San Diego provides local families with care services and resources, while also supporting research and helping connect individuals with medical and clinical trial opportunities.

At Cheer, we love supporting local organizations that are making a difference in the lives of San Diego families. It is an honor to work with ALS San Diego and to share in their commitment to supporting individuals and families navigating ALS.

Walking Together for ALS San Diego

We are also looking forward to coming together for the 2026 ALS San Diego Walk on September 19, 2026, at NTC Park at Liberty Station. The event brings together individuals living with ALS, families, caregivers, healthcare professionals, advocates, and community supporters to raise awareness and funds for the ALS community. Cheer was proud to participate in the 2025 ALS San Diego Walk, and experiences like these continue to remind us how powerful a connected community can be.
