Grief touches every family differently. It may follow the loss of a loved one, begin during a serious or life-limiting illness, or emerge as families adjust to significant changes in the health and independence of someone they love. In recognition of National Grief Awareness Day on August 30, Cheer Home Care and Cheer Health Care highlight the importance of compassion and support for individuals and families navigating some of life’s most difficult moments. There is no one way to experience grief and no set timeline for moving through it. During these seasons, having trusted support at home can help families focus less on the demands of day-to-day care and more on being present with one another.

Understanding Grief During Illness and Caregiving

Grief does not always begin after a loss. Families caring for an aging parent or a loved one with a progressive or serious health condition may experience anticipatory grief as they adjust to changes. Family caregivers may also be balancing appointments, medications, personal care, work, children, and their own emotional well-being. Over time, these responsibilities can become physically and emotionally exhausting. Having additional home care or home health care support can reassure families that their loved one’s daily needs are being met.

How Home Care Can Bring Comfort

During emotionally challenging times, even everyday responsibilities can feel overwhelming. Professional caregivers can provide practical help while also offering something equally important: consistent companionship and a familiar presence.

Depending on the individual’s needs, home care may include:

  • Companionship and emotional support
  • Assistance with bathing, dressing, grooming, and other daily activities
  • Meal preparation and hydration support
  • Medication reminders
  • Mobility and transfer assistance
  • Transportation and appointment support
  • Respite care for family caregivers
  • Help maintaining familiar routines at home

The Role of Skilled Home Health Care

Some families may need additional clinical support alongside personal home care. Cheer Health Care provides skilled services that help individuals with more complex medical needs receive professional care in the comfort of their homes.  Depending on a person’s care plan, this may include nursing services and therapy support.

Caring for the Caregiver

When someone you love is struggling, taking care of yourself can quickly become a secondary priority. Family caregivers may feel guilty about stepping away or asking for help. However, rest and respite are important parts of sustaining the ability to care for someone else. Respite care allows a trusted caregiver to step in so family members can rest, attend appointments, spend time with other loved ones, return to work, or have a moment to recharge.Sometimes support means helping the person receiving care. Sometimes it means supporting the people standing beside them.

Finding Grief Support in San Diego

Home care is one part of a much larger support system, and families should never feel that they have to navigate grief alone. San Diego is fortunate to have organizations dedicated specifically to helping grieving individuals and families. One local resource is The Elizabeth Hospice, a nonprofit organization serving San Diego County. Alongside hospice and palliative care, The Elizabeth Hospice offers grief counseling and support groups for adults, children, couples, and families. Their grief support services are available to community members, including those whose loved one did not receive care through The Elizabeth Hospice.

Connection Matters

Grief can feel incredibly isolating. A familiar face, a helping hand, a conversation, or knowing someone is there can make a difficult day feel a little less overwhelming. This National Grief Awareness Day, we encourage our San Diego community to check in on someone who may be grieving, support a family caregiver, learn about local grief resources, or make time to listen.

At Cheer Home Care and Cheer Health Care, we are honored to support individuals and families throughout many different stages of life. Through compassionate home care, skilled health care, respite support, and connection to our wider San Diego community, our goal is to help families feel supported where it matters most: at home.
