Successful Aging with Oasis Senior Advisors
At Cheer Home Care, we believe in the power of community, education, and collaboration. That’s why we were excited to host a recent Lunch and Learn event with our partners, Oasis Senior Advisors. Led by Brenda-Lee and Geoff Smith, the session was an incredible opportunity to share invaluable insights with our team and deepen our understanding of the elements of successful aging.
Senior Living and the role of Oasis Senior Advisors
Oasis Senior Advisors is a trusted resource for families navigating the complex decisions around senior living. With a passion for helping older adults and their loved ones, they offer guidance in finding the proper care and housing solutions. Brenda-Lee, a nurse by profession, brings a wealth of knowledge and understanding of seniors’ short- and long-term needs. Providing personalized recommendations and connections to community services like Cheer Home Care and Oasis Senior Advisors empowers families to make informed decisions that ensure safety, comfort, and quality of life.
5 Pillars of Successful Aging
During the event, Brenda-Lee and Geoff shared their philosophy on successful aging, which focuses on five essential pillars:
- Housing – Ensuring that seniors have access to safe, accessible living environments is essential. Knowing when to transition to senior living or make home modifications can significantly impact their well-being.
- Health and Wellness – Mobility, cognition, sleep, exercise, and nutrition are all critical aspects of aging. Understanding how to support these areas effectively can mean the difference between staying at home and requiring more intensive care.
- Personal Finance – From home modifications to social day programs, financial planning is vital in determining the feasibility of staying home rather than moving into a community setting.
- Transportation – Losing driving independence can be isolating for many seniors. Solutions that offer safe alternatives for transportation can help maintain a senior’s freedom while reducing the risk of accidents.
- Social Engagement – Social isolation is one of the most challenging issues seniors face, impacting their physical and mental health. Finding ways to keep them socially active is vital to successful aging.
Making Care Personal
A particularly valuable takeaway from the session was the importance of customizing care. As Brenda-Lee highlighted, caregivers who come prepared with activities suited to the client’s condition and training in engaging conversation techniques—like asking open-ended questions—can significantly impact the client’s experience. She emphasized the importance of assessing communities for their immediate fit and their ability to meet clients’ evolving needs as conditions like dementia progress.
It was also enlightening to hear Brenda-Lee dispel a common misconception: a dementia diagnosis doesn’t always mean immediate memory care. Many individuals with dementia can remain at home or in Independent Living with the proper support for an extended period, which is where services like Cheer Home Care play a vital role.
