What You Need to Know About Hospice Care: Learnings with Suncrest Hospice and Cheer Home Care

Hospice care is a compassionate approach to end-of-life care, designed to provide comfort and support to patients and their families during the final stages of life. Suncrest Hospice believes in delivering care that prioritizes the dignity and well-being of patients. Cheer Home Care recently hosted Ashley Pridemore and the Suncrest Hospice team, Sarah Brecker and Ashleigh Means, for a session on all things hospice.

What is Hospice?

Hospice care is a specialized philosophy of care designed for individuals facing terminal illnesses. Unlike treatments to cure the disease, hospice care focuses on relieving symptoms and providing comfort. The goal is to ensure a better quality of life by addressing physical, psychological, emotional, and spiritual needs.

Services Included in Hospice Care

Suncrest Hospice offers a comprehensive range of services to support patients and their families:

  1. Physician Services: All care is administered under the direction of a licensed physician.
  2. Skilled Nursing Services: Each patient is assigned a qualified nurse to manage symptoms and provide ongoing assessment.
  3. Hospice Aide Services: Patients receive assistance with personal care tasks like bathing and showering.  Can visit 5 times a week.
  4. Social Services: A social worker supports patients and their families.  They can provide excellent support services in the community as well.
  5. Spiritual Services: Regular support from a spiritual advisor is available for patients and families.
  6. Medical Equipment, Medication, and Supplies: Hospice covers necessary medical equipment, medications related to the terminal illness, and incontinence supplies based on the patient’s care plan.

Cost of Hospice Care

One of the significant advantages of hospice care is that it is covered 100% by Medicare Part A. Furthermore, hospice services are also covered by Medi-Cal, VA, and many private insurance plans. Suncrest Hospice handles all billing details to alleviate any financial stress on the families.

Eligibility for Hospice Care

Determining eligibility for hospice care involves a few steps:

  1. Evaluation: An order from a physician and a hospice evaluation are required.
  2. Starting Services: Once a physician certifies that the patient has a terminal diagnosis with a life expectancy of six months or less, hospice services can commence.

Why Choose Suncrest Hospice?

Suncrest Hospice is committed to providing the highest standard of care, referred to as “The Suncrest Seven”. Patients receive:

  • Two RN nursing visits per week
  • Five home health aide visits per week
